Marcy-Holmes Neighborhood Association, July 15 board meeting

Florence Court development opposed; 1120 SE Eighth St. duplex 'defeated'; 15th Avenue Plan posting; Metal-Matic parking;

15TH AVENUE PLAN TIMETABLE: In order to allow for feedback on the 15th Avenue SE Urban Design Plan being written by the Cuningham Group, the board plans to post a current draft of the plan on its website (www.marcy-holmes.org), work with the Cuningham Group to solicit comments from developers, and hold a public forum at its October 21st board meeting to allow for comments from Marcy-Holmes residents.

BOARD SUPPORTS RESIDENTIAL VARIANCE APPLICATION: The board agreed to support a request for a variance for an addition to a single-family home on Southeast Seventh Street provided the homeowner obtain a letter of approval from her adjacent neighbor.

BOARD SUPPORTS METAL-MATIC PARKING: The board supported Metal-Matic’s request for zoning changes to use land at 721 SE Second St., 701 SE Second St., and 212 SE Seventh Ave. for its employee, customer and truck parking. Metal-Matic had parked its trucks under the 35W bridge prior to its collapse and new Homeland Security laws that forbid having parking lots under bridges. These zoning changes would allow Metal-Matic to regain its lost parking space.

BOARD OPPOSES FLORENCE COURT DEVELOPMENT: The board agreed to submit its objection to the Florence Court development as it is currently proposed. The board expressed concerned that the development would not preserve Florence Court’s historic integrity.

The board also felt that the proposed 5-bedroom units would not serve the young working families, graduate and professional students as well as Florence Court’s current one- and two-bedroom units.

Florence Court resident, David Dorman thanked the board for acting on residents concerns. Other residents thanked Diane Hofstede for expressing her belief that there “was nothing redeeming about the development.”

DUPLEX DEFEATED: The board thanked Ward 3 Council Member Diane Hofstede for her help in defeating the proposed duplex at 1120 SE Eighth St.

WELCOME BACK STUDENTS: The board approved the design of lawn signs and pamphlets to welcome University of Minnesota students back to campus.
