Green Carpet Film Festival
Forget the Red Carpet! Linden Hills Power & Light (LHP&L) invites residents to create a digital video 30 seconds to 2 minutes in length for a GREEN carpet event. There are three prizes of $300, three prizes of $150 and a grand prize of $500. Videos should promote one of the following themes: 1. The MN Energy Challenge (get information at www.mnenergychallenge.org ); 2. Organics Recycling -benefits or “how to” (research on the web or get information at www.lhpowerandlight.org ); or 3. Waste reduction/ Conservation or Anaerobic Digestion (you can research on the web, or find information at www.lhpowerandlight.org ). Entries are due September 15th, with a screening date of mid September. It’s a great summer project for kids and families!

Upcoming Programs from Second Precinct

· Personal Safety Workshop – We will offer a personal safety workshop from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on July 15th at Eastside Neighborhood Services, 1700 2nd Street NE. Mary Brandl who is a self-defense expert will be instructing you on how to decrease the possibility of assault and what to do if you are assaulted. Call 673-2874 for questions and to RSVP.

· Crime Prevention for Housing Associations is a two-hour workshop that will provide you with insight on how to work with the police. We’ll share with you the same resources neighborhood groups and block clubs use to fight crime in their community and will show you how to adapt them for the needs of your condo, coop, or townhouse. National Night Out Update

National Night Out (NNO) is coming up soon; it’s Tuesday, August 5. July 22 is an important date: it’s the last day to apply to close streets for free on NNO. Street closure costs $100 beginning July 23. People can’t apply for street closure after July 31. July 22 is also the last day people can register their NNO events and be eligible for a drawing for free door prizes such as merchant gift cards and discount coupons. (People can continue to register NNO events after July 22 but they won’t be eligible for the door prize drawing.) All people who register NNO events receive vouchers for Minnesota Twins tickets and can request a number of free items including Mystery Park passes at Nickelodeon Universe MOA, child safety cards, name tags, coloring/word game sheets and reminder door hangers. Blocks new to NNO may be eligible for start-up kits. Details are available at www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/nno . Please share this information with the community as you are able. Feel free to edit. Have you tried the NE Farmers’ Market? It’s held each Saturday at 9 am to 1 pm, featuring a nice market atmosphere, with lots of fresh and local only produce, baked goods, coffee, along with ChefLafayette Montgomery from the Let’s Cook store who will come on each 4th Saturday of each month through the summer. The Chef will lead a tour of folks through the market at 11:00 am and visit some of the vendors and buy some products from each of the vendors and he will lead the group to the Let’s Cook store at 330 E Hennepin Ave for a culinary demonstration
with lots of fun also!

The NE Farmers Market is located at the parking lot of St Boniface Church at 7th and University Ave NE the hours are 9 am to 1 pm each Saturday to Oct 18th, of this year.

HAPPY HOUR WITH A PRESERVATIONIST
Wednesday, July 16, 5:30 — 6:30 pm
The Soap Factory, 518 Second Street SE
Executive Director Ben Heywood and artist/historian Andy Sturdevant will lead a tour of The Soap Factory, a gallery and organization housed in the historic National Purity Soap Factory. The organization is celebrating its twentieth anniversary. It is dedicated to the production, presentation and promotion of emerging contemporary practice across the visual arts. Come and learn more about this unique building and the organization. The event is FREE!

MILL CITY LIVE: ROMA DI LUNA
Thursday, July 17, 6 – 8 p.m.
Enjoy the sounds of acoustic folk as Roma di Luna takes the stage in the Mill Ruins Courtyard at Mill City Museum. Set in the museum’s dramatic open air Ruin Courtyard, “Mill City Live” features eight great evenings of free outdoor music by some of the best local artists. Performances take place on the first and third Thursday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m., with food and drink for purchase by D’Amico Catering.

MINNEAPOLIS SISTER CITY DAY
Sunday, July 20, 1 – 4 pm (program begins at 2 pm)
Nicollet Island Pavilion
People from around the world will share their cultures and celebrate Minneapolis’ 150th Anniversary during Sister City Day. Representatives from at least four of Minneapolis’ sister cities will join in the festivities, which will include Native American dancers, Japanese baton twirlers and Connie Evingson singing Hot Club jazz, which originated in France. Light refreshments will be served. Sister City Day is a free opportunity for the public to learn about cultures from around the world. Minneapolis has eight sister cities, including: Santiago, Chile; Kuopio, Finland; Ibaraki City, Japan; Novosibirsk, Russia; Tours, France; Harbin, China; Uppsala, Sweden; and Eldoret, Kenya. The sister city relationships are supported by citizen groups here in Minneapolis whose members organize exchanges and other activities with our sister cities around the world. Fierce & Fabulous Block Party to feature American Idol STAR Kimberley Locke, dance recording artist Abigail, and comedian ANT
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The First Annual Fierce and Fabulous Block Party benefiting One Heartland (formally Camp Heartland) will be held on July 19th, 2008 from 5 to 10pm. Featured guests will be Kimberley Locke from American Idol, ANT from Last Comic Standing and dance recording artist Abigail.
Proceeds of ticket sales will benefit One Heartland.

Event will be held at the Wilde Roast Café 518 Hennepin Ave. E, Minneapolis, MN 55414, 612-331-4544 Tickets are $20 each and are available at www.oneheartland.org or at the Wilde Roast Café.
