2008 road and trail construction

Summer projects include ongoing I-35W bridge, Gophers' stadium and East Lake Street work

The coming of summer means, of course, road construction. The following summarizes the captial improvement projects, including road and bike trail work, planned by the City of Minenapolis this summer.

For information about county and state projects, visit the Hennepin County website or the MNDoT website.

20th Avenue Resurfacing Project

Work on 20th Avenue South from Riverside Avenue to Minnehaha Avenue South is expected to begin mid-summer and will last approximately two weeks. The work consists of removing a portion of the existing asphalt and placing a new surface over the entire street. The purpose is to extend the life of a roadway by approximately ten years.

Work in front of homes will take one day to remove pavement and a second day to install the new pavement; these dates will not occur consecutively.

No streets will be closed, but street parking will be impacted. “No parking” signs will be posted in front of homes and businesses prior to work on those streets.

U of M Gopher Stadium

Located east of Oak Street, north of Washington Avenue, south of Sixth Street and west of 25th Avenue Southeast, this ongoing project includes the building of the stadium, roadway realignment and utility relocations. Work has been going on since 2006, with a projected end date in 2009.
Updates are available on the
U of M wbsite.

SEMI/Malcolm Avenue SE Reconstruction

A short stretch of Malcolm Avenue Southeast, approximately 570 feet north from Southeast Fifth Street, will be extended to connect with the future Granary Road. The work will include the total reconstruction of streets, sidewalks, storm drain and sewer work, beginning in late summer and lasting one construction season.
Local traffic will be impacted and construction may be completed under traffic.

East Lake Street

The eastern-most stretch of the Lake Street reconstruction will be completed this summer. The work includes the placement of two inches of bituminous wearing course, installing landscape items not installed in 2007, electrical and site amenities, finishing the portion of Lake Street at the northeast corner of 27th Avenue.

I-35W Bridge

The main span erection began May 27 for the new bridge. Crews have to wait for several days for the closure pour—concrete and post tensioning work that prepares for the placement of the next segment. Work is expected to be completed earlier than expected; as early as September. For more information, photos, updates, and webcam footage, visit the MNDoT website.

Hiawatha bike trail connection* *
This trail will connect Minneapolis’s downtown commuter bicycle grid from Hennepin Avenue to the LRT trail at 11th Avenue South and South Third Street.

Work is to begin this summer and will last one construction season with no traffic impact.
