Schoolkids rock — Saturday, Feb. 23
Saturday is the day to support local schoolkids, from preschool to eighth grade, at two separate events in the Seward and Longfellow neighborhoods.
First, starting at 1 p.m., Seward Childcare Center promises “an eclectic mix of music, theater and play that will entertain, amuse and confuse both children and adults” at its “Rumpus: Preschool teachers who Rock,” to be held at Bedlam Theatre, 1501 S. Sixth St.
The preschool boasts a good showing of musicians and performers who moonlight as early childhood education professionals (or more likely vice versa). Hosted by storyteller, teacher and ex-Mercury Rev and John’s Black Dirt band member Mike Huber, the show includes music, puppets, stories, poetry, theatre and even a “Rube Goldberg machine.”
Proceeds from the tickets ($5 per person, $10 for families) go to the
35-year-old Seward Childcare Center, which is “run by a teacher collective, governed by the parents, and emphasizes active citizenship skills for children and the adults that care for them,” according to a release.
Next, head over to the Eagles Club, 2507 E. 25th St., for the third annual “Bands for Band” celebration. Begun in 2006 to resurrect the discontinued music program at Anne Sullivan Communication Center, this year’s the party will help raise funds for band programs at three schools: Anne Sullivan, Sanford Middle School and Seward Montessori. The event features several top musical acts, including The Rockin’ Pinecones, the 34th Street Jazz Combo, the Rich Lewis Band, Razz & Maria and the Pull Tab Mountain Boys, the Front Porch Swingin’ Liquor Pigs and the Bill Geezy Band.
Over the past two years, “Bands for Band!” has successfully raised $16,000 for Sullivan, and the VH1 Save the Music Foundation has contributed $25,000 in musical instruments.
The event runs from 3 to 9 p.m. Tickets, purchased at the door, cost $10 for adults, $5 for children ages six and older, and $25 for families.
If you cannot attend but would like to supp0rt the band programs, donations can be sent to: ASCC PTA Band, care of Anne Sullivan School, 3100 E. 28th St., Minneapolis, MN 55406.
