Street-level LRT would compromise U of M campus

Letter

The University of Minnesota Alumni Association (UMAA) National Board of Directors unanimously voted on Jan. 19, 2008, to oppose light-rail transit (LRT) running at grade on Washington Avenue.

The University and the UMAA are strongly committed to public transit. We support light rail through campus to connect Minneapolis and St. Paul. But the U is a hub of activity unlike anywhere else in the Twin Cities. Washington Avenue is the main artery through campus and is the second busiest pedestrian crossing in the Twin Cities. The UMAA strongly believes that LRT at grade on Washington Avenue will gravely compromise health and safety on campus.

The University of Minnesota has set a bold goal to become one of the top three public research universities in the world, and it deserves a transit solution that supports this courageous vision. The LRT solution must therefore be guided by principles of health and safety, functionality and community, and long-term economic viability.

Perhaps just two or three times in a century does a decision hold so many ramifications for the University of Minnesota. This is one of those times. LRT must be done right the first time. The future of our state’s flagship institution is at stake.
