U of M Good Neighbor Fund accepting grant applications

Neighborhoods and business associations adjacent to the Twin Cities campus, where the university’s Gopher’s TCF Bank Stadium is under construction, may apply for grants through the Good Neighbor Fund. The grants are intended to help “preserve the beauty, serenity and security of communities that are impacted by the new stadium,” according to an announcement by the university. Deadline for grant applications is Tuesday, April 1. For information or to apply, visit www.community.umn.edu/gnf.

University Area Alliance elects officers, selects team members

The new University Area Neighborhood Alliance recently elected two co-chairs and appointed work team members, Ward 2 Council Member Cam Gordon reported. Gordon is one of three city representatives to the alliance, which was proposed in a neighborhood impact report to the 2007 state Legislature.

The report recommended steps to improve declining neighborhoods and housing near the university, including establishing an alliance with representation from the university, the city and neighborhoods adjacent to the campus. The legislation appropriated $750,000 and required the alliance to conduct one or more demonstration projects, then report to the Legislature by January 2009.

Alliance co-chairs elected were Dick Poppele, president of the Prospect Park/East River Road Improvement Association (PPERRIA), and Karen Himle, vice president for university relations. Alliance work teams and members appointments: Demonstration Projects: Gordon, Marilyn Burns, Doris Wickstrom, Kris Nelson, Mike Christenson, Melissa Bean and Jan Morlock. Early Start Initiatives Work Team: Wendy Menken, Kendre Turonie and Jan Morlock. Resources and Partnerships Work Team: Arvonne Fraser, Himle and Jan Morlock. Vision and Long Term Plan Work Team: Wendy Menken, Dick Gilyard, Richard Pfutzenreuter, Alex Fink and Jan Morlock.
